Description
Raise Your Child (To New Heights!):
Edition notes: Maximum of 2 numbered editions. Edition #1 was painted at 30×30. New stencil sets were then cut to repaint edition #2 at a size of 16×20. The image featured is of Edition #2.
Original painting process:
Unless otherwise noted, everything I create is painted using artist-grade acrylic spray paint, applied through hand-cut multilayered stencils, made from my own original illustrations. Articles are printed on archival paper and collaged in the background to give depth, context & texture. Paintings are done on a 1.5in deep gallery wrapped canvas, and come ready to hang.
How do “Editions” work?:
One of the unique things about stencil art is the ability to paint multiple variants (referred to as “Editions”) using the same stencil sets. In order to ensure long term collectability, original paintings are limited to numbered editions of 1, 3, 5, or 10. Every year, prices on originals and all remaining editions will increase slightly. This ensures that each subsequent sell of an original edition will increase the value of those that were purchased prior to it. The max quantities of each paintings’ editions are determine when I paint the first original, and will be labeled on the back at the time of creation (example: “The Great Dictator” edt. #1 of 2).
Each variant is hand collaged with unique articles, hand painted using the original stencil set, and will have minor variations throughout the piece making it completely one of a kind. After the first edition is painted I typically paint subsequent editions 1 or 2 at a time, in order, as they sell, until the edition line is complete. (example: I paint edition #1, and a collector purchases it. After #1 has sold, I paint #2 and #3. After #2 and #3 have sold I paint #4. At this time, prices on originals increase by about 10%. #4 sells for a higher price than editions 1-3, and I move on to paint Editions #5 & 6, etc…). In most cases all printed reproductions are based on a high resolution scan of Edition #1.
